First, make a list of the items to include in your 72 hour kit. Prepare a duffle bag or a plastic container to put all the items in your emergency kit. Choose the most important things you need to include from your list and put those items in place to your container or bag.
You can put pre-made, ready to eat foods and high energy giving food such us rice and energy bars. This kind of food is easier to prepare and are less bulky in the bag. Pack in some cooking utensils, aluminum foil and a can opener as well.
Duct tape is a must. Also rope, a shovel that can fold, scissors, a pry bar, a knife with a sharp blade, super glue, work gloves, screw driver, pliers, wrench, magic marker, Leatherman tool, and some plastic containers for storage.
Pack in some candles or similar, a flashlight with extra batteries, and light sticks.
For shelter you can pack a tube tent or other kind of tent, a sleeping bag, an emergency blanket, rain gear, and plastic sheeting like a tarp.
Water can be purified in some way so pack some purification tablets, bleach, and a bandana to strain the water. Include at least 1 gallon of water per person per day. 2 gallons is better; one for drinking, and one for washing and other uses.
Pack some waterproof matches, a lighter, flint/steel, hand warmers, and a magnifying glass.
Communication needs may also be useful in some way. So you can also include a battery powered radio ( or solar or crank), a signal mirror, a whistle, a cell phone, paper and pencil, prepaid phone cards, flares, and a list of important phone numbers.
For hygiene, include toilet paper, deodorant, lotion, any medication you need, soap, tissues, razor and shaving cream, insect repellant, a comb or brush, and any other hygiene items you may need.
Lastly, pack in some good clothes to wear like a pair of tops, jeans, undergarments and sunglasses.
