Some Home Truths

Myth 1 - All White Foods Are BAD!

Some are. Refined foods are best left on the supermarket shelf. Make small changes to your shopping and switching refined bread for whole grain bread, or better yet, make your own. Try wholewheat pasta and rice. It takes a little bit longer to cook but its much tastier and easier to digest. People who have switched to less refined foods tend to suffer less bloating and actually lose weight.

Remember that the quickest way to get a flat stomach is to reduce bloating. So often that flat stomach that seems to elude is just hidden from us due to poor diet.

The closer we stay to the ground the better. Try and eat organic foods if possible. They are a bit more expensive but worth it. If you only switch three foods, switch to organic carrots, organic strawberries and organic dairy products.

Safe white foods are cauliflower, celery, parsnip, celeriac, onion, garlic, sushi nori, tofu, feta cheese (in small quantities) and egg whites. Eggs are fine in small quantities but if you have high cholesterol, try and avoid the yolks.

Myth 2 - I Have A Slow Metabolism

Well speed it up then! I am not being dismissive as everyone is different but diet and exercise is the quickest way to get things going again.

Eat foods that are high in energy, take longer to digest and are as natural and unprocessed as possible. Eat nuts and fruit during the day to keep you going.

Drink plenty of water or fluids. Some people have difficulty drinking just water. Drink cooled herbal tea or diluted fruit juice but make sure you stay well hydrated as this helps digestion also. Remember, the better your digestion, the closer you are to get a flat stomach.

Myth 3 - I Need To Eat Less To Lose Weight

Eating less or too little can put your body into starvation mode. It will slow your metabolic rate right down to preserve the energy and food that it has. Eating small amounts, more often, will demonstrate to your body that there is enough food and its ok to digest it.

Eating small amounts more regularly also helps reduce bloating and will help you sustain your energy levels. Less bloating means you can get a flat stomach, still eat and really enjoy food and you do not have to do countless sit ups and spend money on expensive home exercise equipment and supplements.

A really simple tip is to start each meal with a small slice of wholegrain bread with extra virgin olive oil. Just a little bit, mind. This will help take the edge off your hunger, reduce bloating, improve digestion and increase your intake of Omega3, 6 & 9 which is good for brain function. It will also help you get a flat stomach as you are more inclined to eat less.

Before you start on any sort of weight loss or fitness programme, please consult your doctor if you have not exercised in a while.
